We Are Faraja
A FEW WORDS ABOUT US
During the 2007-2008 Kenyan political crisis, many children in Kibera were orphaned and living on the streets. The diretor could not simply send these children seeking a home away once they were on her doorstep, and so her numbers continued to grow. They were registered as a Community Based Organization (CBO) in 2008. Although she had so little, she continued to provide for them as much as she could afford.
The small rusty shelter in Kibera was insufficient for so many children. Food and money were always scarce. Not able to afford the rent, they were eventually evicted.
The children, six of whom were terminally ill and the director ended up living on the streets for three months until a local church discovered them. With the support of the local community, the director was finally able to afford the rent of the small house they are currently living in. Although they could still not afford electricity, and having one meal a day, they were grateful for finally having a roof over their heads.
Faraja Adventist Children's Center is located in Ngong, Kenya. Faraja's mission is to provide vulnerable and orphaned children with opportunities to live a healthy and successful life. Currently, 76 children between the ages of 2-16 reside at Faraja.
In the last 14 years the Mama and Director of Faraja, and her children have suffered unspeakable tragedies, hardships, and countless challenges. Despite these obstacles the Director and her children have endured through them all, pushed forward, and continued to show their strength, patience, and dedication towards achieving their dreams.
Faraja began in late 2005 in Kibera, the second largest slum in Africa, located in Nairobi. Trained as a teacher, the director began offering after school tuition for children in the slum. The children the director was teaching brought the attention of Kibera orphans who came claiming they wanted teaching also. They never paid yet never left. Soon, despite simply wanting to teach, the director found herself the guardian of several orphaned children living in and outside of her metal shack.
